When it comes to hand recovery, even small movements can make a big difference. Whether you’re healing from an injury, living with a hand condition, or simply looking to keep your hands flexible and strong, consistent exercise is key.

Board-certified plastic surgeon and hand specialist Dr. Brian Pinsky demonstrates three easy exercises using nothing more than a highlighter. These movements can be done at home, in just a few minutes a day, to help restore mobility, strength, and control in your hands.

1. Roll It Up – Build Strength and Smooth Mobility

Holding a highlighter in your hand, roll it upward using your fingers. This exercise helps strengthen the small muscles in your fingers while also improving joint mobility. It’s a great way to reintroduce smooth, controlled motion into your grip after stiffness or injury.

2. Lift Into a Hook Fist – Increase Flexibility and Range of Motion

From an open hand, curl your fingers into a hook-like shape while holding the highlighter. This movement stretches and activates your tendons, promoting flexibility and encouraging a fuller range of motion. It can be especially helpful if you’re working on regaining strength after surgery or easing tension from overuse.

3. Roll Between Thumbs and Fingers – Improve Coordination and Control

Pass the highlighter between your thumb and other fingers, rolling it back and forth. This fine motor exercise enhances dexterity and coordination, making everyday tasks—like buttoning a shirt or typing—feel easier and more natural.

Why Hand Exercises Matter

Your hands are complex, made up of delicate joints, tendons, and muscles that all work together for strength and precision. When injury, surgery, or conditions like arthritis affect them, rehabilitation exercises help keep movement smooth, reduce stiffness, and prevent future problems.

At the Institute for Hand Surgery, our team is dedicated to helping patients regain comfort and function in their hands.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

These three exercises are simple but powerful tools to support your recovery and overall hand health. Try them daily for a few minutes and remember—progress happens with consistency.
