Dr. Brian A. Pinsky recently corresponded with a young woman who reached out for advice on treatment for a congenital hand difference. Having been born with a condition that compromised her hand function, she had adapted well to live a full life while using her hands to the best of her ability. However, she had concerns about the appearance of her hands and contacted The Institute for Hand Surgery at LIPSG to inquire about treatment options. Through an email correspondence, Dr. Pinsky learned more about her medical history and was able to review photos to formulate personalized treatment advice. He had concerns that a surgical approach could compromise function in her particular case, but he advised her that custom prosthetics could address her aesthetic concerns. While the options for prosthetics had been very limited when the patient was a child, Dr. Pinsky was familiar with advances in technology that could make prosthetics an option for her today. Ultimately the patient received treatment out of state, but she recently reached back out to Dr. Pinsky to thank him for positively impacting the course of her care. She had not realized the options that were available, but after her discussion with Dr. Pinsky she is now excited to be in the process of receiving custom prosthetics.
