What Is Hand Rejuvenation?
The hands are one of the areas of the body that give away our age—and can start to show signs of aging even before our faces. As we age, our hands lose elasticity, and lost collagen can make veins, bones, and tendons appear more pronounced, while sun exposure can cause unsightly age spots or dark spots to develop.
What Is Hand Rejuvenation?
Hand rejuvenation procedures are a popular way to correct common signs of aging in the hands. For men and women who want to maintain young-looking hands, the clinical team at the Institute for Hand Surgery at New York Plastic Surgical Group, a Division of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group is proud to offer a variety of advanced age-defying treatment options.
Our treatments are designed to refresh and restore aging hands to achieve a more youthful appearance. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your concerns, evaluate your hands, and develop a custom hand rejuvenation treatment plan to achieve your cosmetic goals.
Laser Treatment
A common method of treatment that may be recommended to improve the skin of your hands is laser treatment. This can correct pigmentation and texture issues that develop over time from sun damage and the aging process, such as freckles, sun spots, brown spots, scars, and wrinkles. Our team offers both Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing.
- Intensive Pulsed Light (IPL): During an IPL treatment session, a handpiece sends pulses of light energy to the target area on the back of the hands. This energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by abnormal cells. Any blemishes on your skin should gradually begin to fade, improving skin tone. IPL also helps promote collagen growth and skin texture.
- Fraxel® Laser Resurfacing: The Fraxel re:store™ laser uses fractional technology that sends laser energy beneath the skin’s surface. Damaged skin cells are destroyed, triggering your body’s reaction to heal the area and replace old cells with new, healthier tissue.
Minimal downtime is typically needed after our laser treatments. Multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve the best possible outcome
Fat Grafting & Injectable Fillers
Injectable fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite are an effective way to plump the back of the hands and restore lost volume. In addition to dermal fillers like Radiesse® and Restylane® Lyft, our team also offers a more natural alternative known as fat grafting. Both of these options can provide very natural-looking results.
- RADIESSE®: The first filler of its kind, Radiesse is FDA-approved to restore lost volume in the back of the hands. By placing small injections under the skin, the hands achieve a more supple appearance. Results from Radiesse have been shown to last for about 1-2 years. In addition to its immediate effects, the injectable stimulates collagen production for continued improvement.
- Restylane Lyft: This hyaluronic acid (HA) gel injectable is used to add volume to the back of the hands. This dermal filler is designed to fill wrinkles and add fullness to aging hands for a more youthful appearance. Results from Restylane Lyft injections in the hands typically last about 6 months.
- Fat Grafting: A more natural alternative, fat grafting, also referred to as fat transfer, involves taking a small amount of excess fat from one area of your body and transferring it into the back of your hands to correct the loss of volume. These fat injections help plump the hands where the skin has begun to thin, creating a natural-looking rejuvenation. Extra fatty tissue may be injected to help make up for the small amount that is naturally absorbed by the body over the first weeks.
While results from injectable fillers can last for a year or longer, patients can choose to schedule follow-up treatments to maintain their soft, plump hand appearance.
