What Are Migraines?
Migraines are an extremely common problem that can be described as debilitating headaches. They can last for a few hours or multiple days, and are often accompanied by symptoms such as:
- Pain
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Light sensitivity
- Other sensory issues
Due to their severity, migraines can prevent individuals from living their daily lives and, consequently, tend to affect their overall quality of life. To help relieve this pain and reduce, if not completely eliminate, migraine recurrence, our reconstructive surgeons provide innovative solutions for lasting results.
Treatment for Migraines
The best candidates for migraine surgery are typically those who see improvement from treatment with injectables. Our surgeons are extensively trained in migraine surgery and perform innovative techniques that have successfully helped eliminate migraine symptoms for many patients. The procedure works by releasing the compressed muscles that put pressure on the nerves and cause migraine pain. The muscles most often connected to migraines include the following areas:
- Forehead
- Temple
- Back of the head
- Deviated septum in the nose
Depending on the area being treated, a small portion of the muscle or nerve tissue may be removed or detached. Following surgery, some patients may feel relief right away. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete for each muscle area that is triggering migraines. Patients will often be screened for surgery by injecting BOTOX® to the affected nerves to see the amount of improvement in their symptoms.
