In an article posted by The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Steven Shin is recognized for his outstanding work on NFL quarterback, Drew Brees. Previously performing surgery on MLB player Mike Trout, this was not Shin’s first athlete to come into the office for an injury. The article says, “Shin is known in the medical community for his pioneering method of repairing the ulnar collateral ligament with an internal brace, which allows patients to slice their recovery times in half.” Hand injuries can be a defining moment in the career of any professional, or even an amateur athlete. Dr. Brian Pinsky has had similar success using the same techniques.
Brees was told he would be out on injury for 8-10 weeks, however, he was practicing in less than five weeks after his surgery. Although not a huge sports fan himself, Dr. Shin is aware of athletes’ finger ability to bend in unnatural directions, and has ordered specialized metal plates because of the size of their hands, too. Dr. Shin’s track record includes some of the most recognizable hands on various teams and has been made one of the most valuable people in sports!
